For a young girl growingup in a traditional Jewish settlement in Siberia in 1919, an arranged marriagewas a fact of life. And, Michal's father had justarranged such a marriage for her; marriage to a man she has never met and aboutwhom she knows nothing at all. Michal is understandably terrified. Onher wedding night, Michal's mother assures her that everything will be justfine. It is her duty to be a good and faithfulwife to her husband and provide him with strong, healthy children. Perhaps love will grow over time. However, itis still tradition, and Michal has nochoice.
But destiny, it seems, has other plans for Michal. When tragedy strikes andshe is forced to leave her home and travel to Berlin, even the strongest oftraditions can become meaningless. During the peak of the Weimar Republic, Michal, a young girl from a small religiouscommunity suddenly finds herself thrust into a world where art and culture areblossoming, and perversion and depravity are rampant. Over the next fourteen tumultuousyears, Michal is slowly transformed. Sheis no longer the scared little girl whostood under a canopy and said "I do" to a stranger. In that girl's place now stands a strong woman with a life of herown.
However, it is now 1933.Life in Berlin is changing. Dark storm clouds are looming on the horizon. Adolf Hitler is about to become the Chancellorof Germany, and that will change everything forever.

I'm all for sex, but Roberta Kagan depends too much on the sexual aspect of her characters lives rather than developing the people more completely. I did not understand, for one thing, why Alina drifted away from her mother as she grew to adulthood. Was it simply because Michal kept her from her father for five years? Not a good enough reason. Michal should have made her understand why--she was the result of rape, not once but twice. I've read two of her books now and won't read anymore. I am very interested in pre-WWII history and what led up to the war and the horrendous results of Hitler's reign, but there are more and better books on Germany and the Holocaust. Sorry, I wanted to like it more, but couldn't.Product details

Michal Destiny Volume 1 Roberta Kagan 9781535485968 Books Reviews
With each book of Ms. Kagan, I am discovering how good her writing is. She is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This particular read starts in Russia and goes to the "Night of Glass* in Germany when Jewish businesses were terribly damaged followed by stricter rules for them. Although there is sadness in the story, there are also lessons learned and forgiveness. These things were very well written and events of which most of us have to deal at one point or anther in our lives. Perhaps it isn't brought on by war, but certainly present. These are ordinary people leading ordinary lives until world events change everything for them. There is also an issue that would make for a lively book group discussion. Do you turn your back on most of your religious beliefs in public in order to survive or do you stand solidly with them and expire? It is something for which the reader must think to understand some of the story. Yes, the story ends abruptly, but does it really? When thinking over history and all the night brought forth, so many lives were changed at that point. Isn't that a good place to end this particular story? You know things are never going to be the same for Michal and her family. For those who favor reading stories that take place in this time period, I highly recommend this read.
I was completely astounded by the overwhelmingly glowing reviews for this book. It is written about a fascinating, and important topic. However, the writing is ABYSMAL. The characters are one-dimensional, but it's the prose that is cringe inducing. The drawn out explanations, and "translations" were stilted, repetitive, plodding dialogue were painful. There are far better novels than this one. I just wish it had been better.
Roberta Kagan has a way of writing books that are like taking a ride back in time. You will feel the character fear and pain, it's like you're a person back in her time. She writes in a form that is very easy but amazing. She my favorite author about the Holocaust. She tells things through her character that are like a history lesson through someone who lived it. Her characters seems so real, it's like you're Papa telling a story. Alike her all my love detrick series I can't wait for this series to unfold, I'm waiting for the next book. This story is based on Holocaust Nazi times, alike many of Kagan books. This book is great.
I tried to get into the book but the writing is naive, at best. I felt like I was reading a child's book until I got to some of the sexual parts. Poorly written. Waste of time.
I bought the first three of the series. I will NOT buy the next. By the end of book #3 I was angry at the sloppiness and what I consider disrespect to the reader. Too bad because the story had its good points.
Not quite sure who the intended audience for this series is - naive vocabulary and style seem like teens, sexual content negates that. There is potential for a decent read - plot, characters, era - but it just doesn't make it. The first book assumes the reader has little knowledge of Hebrew terms and informs parenthetically - annoying when the same info could have been incorporated less awkwardly in the writing. Thankfully this stops in the follow-up books. The writer appears to have a limited vocabulary - I have never encountered "puke" as often as in this book (and this is as the mother or two boys). Way too much repetition and "filler" words! I guess that's one way to get the word count up. Wretched grammar, punctuation, full of typos, misspellings. The three books could have easily been combined into one and been an intriguing read (if the editing had been better)..
I'm not sure what bothered me the most - the writing style, the poor editing or the need to do this as three books (and now it appears four).
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
First of all, there is much to like about Michal's Destiny. The characters are well drawn and sympathetic, the writing is engaging, and the book focuses on a less known part of Jewish history. I enjoyed it enough that after reading the first few chapters of the free copy, I splurged and bought the actual book from . Ideally, I would've given the book 4 1/2 stars, but that wasn't an option so I went with 4 stars instead.
The reason I took off a star was because of a few factors.
1. Although Michal starts off as incredibly frum and dedicated to Orthodox traditions, she changes rapidly after she leaves her homeland. I find it hard to believe that a widow who's horrified at the thought of remarriage, to another Jew at that, changes enough to have a lusty affair while her husband is off playing the field.
2. The book ends very abruptly at the brink of WWII. Michal seems relatively unconcerned about Hitler's rise to power, though perhaps many Jews felt that way. Certainly, most didn't try to escape until the writing on the wall was clear. From a literature point of view though, the book just ends. You turn the page expecting to find a continuation of the story and instead there's an acknowledgement page. Even though this is meant to be part of a series, an ending should feel like an ending.
That said, Michal's Destiny has a lot of merit and is an enjoyable story that gives insight into Jewish culture in the early 20th century. I would recommend adding it to your library!
